90s Fashion

90’s Fashion: clothes, shoes and haircuts

Just like it is with any other fashion decade, 90’s fashion started out with a little bit of lingering trademarks of the eighties particularly in the more provincial areas. Above the knee straight skirts were still being worn and oversized shoulder padded shirts and large t-shirts. The blazer which was a spawn of the late 80’s remained popular with women over thirty-five well into the middle of the nineties.

For younger women the middle of 90’s fashion meant that concert t-shirts were becoming all the rage, the name of the band on them didn’t matter very much as much the t-shirts being black; the epitome of coolness being of course having a black leather jacket to go with the black t-shirt. As far as skirts were concerned they had to either be plaid or black and either above the knee or dragging the floor, nothing in the middle was acceptable 90’s fashion.

Sometime during the middle of the nineties the seventies made a sort of a comeback with platform shoes and bellbottoms coming back in fashion, and with tie dyed t-shirts being popular for a brief window of time. Platform shoes however modified with consideration for the decade and spawned a new sort of more bulky shoe which had a distinct heel.Considering the general minimalistic look of 90’s fashion, hair was probably the least of one’s worries whether you were a boy or a girl.

Towards the late nineties that metal head look was pretty much gone thanks to the rise of the boy bands and at least as far as girls were concerned the cute girly look was coming back, with bright tops and cur off jeans. As far as the males of the species were concerned this started a trend toward very baggy pants, and overly large t-shirts. This is also the time when hip-hop started its climb in the mainstream media and looking like “gangster” was considered cool.

The end of the nineties brought with it a certain sense of stability, with so many fads and trends coming and going as the decade progressed people were looking for some stability and they got it. Jeans returned to their normal size, t-shirts didn’t have to be oversized anymore and make-up started looking more natural. Many of those who survived 90’s fashion would tell you that they would’ve never worn at the end of the nineties what they were wearing only ten, seven, or even three years before.
